June 2021 Meeting: Immigration to America Prior to 1820

Immigration to America Prior to 1820
Presenter: Chris Green
Saturday, June 26, 2021 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Early settlers were primarily English and Irish. Dutch settlers came to New Netherlands between 1630 and 1674, and prior to 1800 about 50,000 immigrants arrived from what is now Western Germany, Alsace Lorraine, Austria, and Switzerland.  Chris will tell us about these early immigrations.

Prior to 1820, there is no single place to look for records.  They could be in state archives or libraries, university special collections or museums, or in a US or overseas archive.  Many surviving early passenger lists have been published in books, CDs or online.  One of the best websites for pre-1820 ship’s passenger records is Olive Tree Genealogy or Cyndi’s List/ships.

Christine Bell Green, PLCGS, is a professional genealogist and genealogy teacher at Palo Alto and Mountain View/Los Altos adult schools. She is a past president of SMCGS and the current seminar chair of the society.

This meeting will be held remotely via the Zoom web conferencing system. Several days before the date of the meeting, a link to the Zoom meeting will be sent to SMCGS eNews subscribers (both members and non-members) and will also be posted in the Members Only section of this website.

This event is free and all are welcome. For more information about our monthly meetings, click here.
