The DNA Interest Group meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month from 2:00 to 3:45 PM. During Shelter at Home, the group will meet via Zoom.

The purpose of this group is to help you better understand how to use DNA in your family research. We explore various ways to use testing sites like AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, 23andMe, FamilyTreeDNA, and third-party DNA sites. We work collaboratively to interpret your DNA results and to help answer your DNA questions. There is no charge to attend, but membership in SMCGS is a requirement. Generations Day marks the beginning of the Main Library’s twentieth anniversary year. The building comes alive with music, storytelling, food, and opportunities for reflection designed to welcome children, parents, grandparents, and neighbors into shared civic space.

Using Free Genealogical Resources at Local Libraries (16 May 2026)

Learn where to find and use all the major genealogy database collections at local public libraries, FamilySearch Centers, and Affiliate Libraries, including library editions of Ancestry, MyHeritage, and newspaper collections: Newspapers.com, and Newspaper Archive. While some genealogy databases may be restricted for use only within the library, many valuable resources can be accessed at home. In this presentation, you will learn how to conduct research without breaking the bank.

Rachel Hull Kellerman is a professional teacher, librarian, and archivist. She currently teaches a Genealogy Workshop at the Palo Alto Adult School as well as computer workshops at the San Mateo Public Library.

This beginner-friendly session explores how different types of DNA — autosomal, Y-DNA, and mitochondrial DNA — can help confirm family connections, add new branches to your tree, and break through brick walls. The session will include a high-level overview of DNA tools available at the major testing sites. Case studies will illustrate how the presenter has used DNA to uncover family stories.

Terry is a genealogist with nearly 50 years of experience, specializing in DNA-based research to solve family mysteries. She facilitates a monthly Research Like a Pro with DNAsession for her local family history society and leads the Advanced DNA group for the BC Genealogical Society, where she supports researchers in refining their skills and building confidence in working with DNA results.
