Research Services

Please include both the payment for research and a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) with your research request. Also, please include your telephone number and email address in the event we need to contact you.

You may either send your request via mail or you may pay through PayPal (calculate the postage and include with your payment).

Research requests will not be completed until we have received payment. Research requests are completed by volunteer members of SMCGS.

  • General Research Services
    • San Mateo County Genealogical Society (SMCGS) provides some research services upon request. The cost of each hour of research is $20.00, minimum one hour. Any research done outside the SMCGS library will also include the cost of expenses.
    • If research is required that is not provided by SMCGS, the names of professional genealogists may be provided, upon request. SMCGS is not responsible for any liability that may arise from the contract between the requestor and the professional genealogist.

  • Schellens Collection Index
    • This index is available online.
    • Copies of pages from the Schellens Collection will be $5.00 for the first 3 pages and $1.00 for each additional page. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE). See address to send to below.

  • Clipping File Index
    • This index is available online.
    • Copies of clippings from this collection will be $5.00 for the first 3 pages and $1.00 for each additional page. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE). See address to send to below.

  • San Mateo County Obituaries Index
    • This index is available online.
    • Copies of obituaries will be $5.00 each. Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE). See address to send to below.
    • Obituaries not listed in this index require outside General Research Services (see above) and are subject to those fees.

  • Laying & Tinney Mortuary Files Index
    • This index is available online.
    • Copies of individual mortuary files are available at $12 each. Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE). See address to send to below.

  • San Mateo County Sheriff's Office Booking Registers Index
    • Copies of the registers and indexes are available for Volumes 7-12 (1924-1940) and 14-16 (1945-1953).
    • Copies of items are available for a $5 fee each for the first page and $0.50 for additional pages. Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE). See address to send to below.
    • Index for Volumes 7 and 8 (covering the years 1924 to 1931) is available online.
      • If you find a name in the online index, the society will provide you with a complete transcription for $5 for the first transcription and $0.50 for each additional transcription.
