SMCGS sends out a digital newsletter for all members via email. Members who prefer can still receive a paper copy of the newsletter for a fee of $15.00/year (to cover the cost of paper, copying and first class postage for the six newsletters sent during the year). Those who wish to sign up and pay for the paper newsletter can mail in this form or drop it off at a general meeting.

The current newsletter, as well as past issues, can be viewed online under the members section of the SMCGS website. From there you can not only view each of the newsletters but download and print it if you would like.

If we don't have your current e-mail address, please contact the Membership Chairperson immediately so you will be certain to get your newsletter.

The San Mateo County Genealogical Society (SMCGS) produces a newsletter every other month. The newsletter keeps the members up-to-date on all the events occurring at SMCGS, as well as offering information regarding other events, both state-wide and nationally. Columns each month include research tips and methodology news about the library and additions to its books, as well as columns about web sites and publications to aid in genealogy research.

Guidelines for Submitting Articles

Members and friends of SMCGS are encouraged to submit articles for publication in the SMCGS Newsletter. It is published in January, March, May, July, September and November.  Newsletter article contributions are due no later than the 5th of the month prior to publishing. For example submissions for the Jan/Feb newsletter are due no later than Dec 5th.  But please do not wait until the 5th. If you have something to submit we appreciate it if you send it as soon as possible. Please email them to newsletter@smcgs.org.

Material should be on a topic of interest to SMCGS members. Subjects might include:

Upcoming genealogy events

Research tips

News about Society members/Event pictures

New book, software or website reviews

Information about repositories for San Mateo County or California researchers

Personal research case studies highlighting methodology or examination of evidence

Submission guidelines:

Submissions should be in your own words. If you quote someone be sure to put their words in “quotes” and cite the source.

If you refer to a source please include the full citation of that source.

Please include pictures if you have them!

We prefer to receive submissions in a Word file using Times New Roman 12 pt.

When submitting material for publication, please attach a written statement granting The San Mateo County Genealogical Society publication rights. This can be a simple statement in the body of your email.  The copyright will remain with the author.

The SMCGS Newsletter accepts advertising at the rate of $25.00 for a business card sized advertisement for one issue. Special rates are available for multiple issues.
